French M1830 National Grenadier Guard Officers Shako
This French Officers Shako dates from the Louis-Philippe reign of 1830-1848, the pattern however dates from 1818 with typical Orléanist fixtures. Its construction is of paperboard covered in black felt with a black leather top and a black leather flat peak.
A 32mm wide (approx) band of figured gold lace encircles the top of the shako. The chinscales and plate are gilt as are the chinscale bosses.
The plate displays the Gallic Cockerel on a trophy of flags behind a wreath atop a cartouche bearing a flaming grenade. The metal rosette/cockade at the top front of the shako is of the National Coloures red, white and blue with a centered cock. The pom pom at the top varied according to the unit inwhich the wearer belonged.
This shako would have been issued circa early 1830's. A very similar shako can be seen in the book "Military Headdress 1660 to 1914" by Col. Robert Rankin.
This shako is in excellent condition considering its age of around 180 years.
