US M38 Tanker/AFV
This helmet was used throughout WWII by crews of Armoured Fighting Vehicles and Tanks, the shell is made of a compressed cardboard composite and the liner was leather, so offered no ballistic protection, it was designed to protect the wearer from injuries that could be caused within the vehicle. The ear flaps housed earphones and were held against the wearers head by spring straps riveted to the skull of the helmet, a stretchable strap threaded through loops in the rear of the helmet and attached to snaps on the lower sides helped for a firm and stable fit. The goggles are the common Polaroid general purpose type widely used in WWII, the earphones are the R-14 type also most commonly used in conjunction with these helmets. These helmets continued to be worn well after 1945.
